Job Description

Design Landscapes You'll Be Proud to Put Your Name On.

Unlike many design firms, Piedmont Carolina is a vertically integrated nursery and landscape company. You'll have the opportunity to walk our nursery for inspiration, collaborate directly with our in-house installation team, and remain involved from the first client conversation through the finished landscape.

Piedmont Carolina is seeking an experienced Landscape Designer & Sales Consultant to lead the customer-facing side of our landscape design/build division. This is not a desk-only design position. You will own opportunities from the first client conversation through design, estimating, proposal, sale, construction coordination, and final walkthrough.

We believe exceptional work deserves recognition. Piedmont Carolina intends to support professional photography, industry publications, and award submissions for outstanding projects while creating an environment where talented designers can build a portfolio—and a career—they're proud of.

For more than 40 years, Piedmont Carolina has built its reputation on relationships, trust, quality, variety, and service. Our landscape team serves discerning residential clients as well as commercial and institutional properties throughout the Triad. We are looking for a polished, creative, commercially minded professional who can become a trusted face of the company and a key member of our leadership team.

What You'll Own

  • Manage active landscape leads and opportunities, including an existing backlog of prospective projects.
  • Meet with clients on-site, listen carefully, understand their goals, budget, style, and site constraints, and translate those needs into compelling landscape solutions.
  • Create professional digital landscape plans, renderings, or visual presentations using reputable landscape design software.
  • Develop project scopes, material quantities, labor assumptions, estimates, and proposals with a strong focus on both design quality and profitable execution.
  • Present proposals confidently, address client questions, and own the sales process through close.
  • Remain the primary client relationship owner throughout the project, working closely with the Landscape Construction Operations Manager from handoff through completion.
  • Conduct project follow-up and final walkthroughs, resolve client concerns professionally, and protect the Piedmont Carolina customer experience.
  • Coordinate plant and material selections with Piedmont Carolina's nursery and landscape teams.
  • Manage your own calendar, site visits, design time, proposals, follow-up, and active project pipeline with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Over time, participate in business development and lead generation as Piedmont Carolina expands its marketing and sales capabilities.
  • Adopt and effectively use evolving CRM, estimating, project-management, communication, and other business technologies.

What We're Looking For

  • Demonstrated success in residential and/or commercial landscape design, preferably within a design/build environment.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality landscape design work. A portfolio will be required as part of the interview process.
  • Proficiency with professional landscape design software and the ability to create high-quality digital plans, renderings, and client presentations.
  • Strong working knowledge of regional plant material, growth habits, cultural requirements, and appropriate plant selection.
  • Working knowledge of landscape construction, hardscapes, grading/site conditions, irrigation fundamentals, and low-voltage landscape lighting.
  • Ability to interpret site plans, surveys, topographic information, elevations, and other project documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the confidence to work directly with discerning residential, commercial, and institutional clients.
  • Demonstrated sales ability: comfortable discussing budgets, presenting value, handling objections, and asking for the business.
  • Strong estimating, organizational, time-management, and follow-through skills.
  • Self-directed and accountable; able to recognize what needs to happen and move work forward without constant supervision.
  • Comfort learning and adopting new technology and business systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in landscape design, horticulture, landscape architecture, or a related discipline preferred, but not required. Relevant experience and a strong body of work may substitute for formal education.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Opportunities for additional recognition incentives tied to award-winning projects and industry recognition.
  • Company support for professional photography, industry publications, and award submissions for exceptional work.
  • $80,000–$100,000 annual base salary, commensurate with experience and demonstrated capabilities.
  • Annual discretionary bonus opportunity.
  • Company vehicle for client meetings and business travel.
  • Health insurance.
  • 401(k) / profit-sharing benefits.
  • Two weeks of paid time off from day one, plus company holidays.
  • Phone reimbursement / company-supported mobile communication.

The Opportunity

This role reports directly to the President and is considered a division-head position within Piedmont Carolina's key leadership team. The right person will have substantial autonomy and a meaningful opportunity to shape how the landscape division sells, designs, communicates, and grows.

If you are an accomplished landscape designer who also enjoys people, selling, problem-solving, and seeing your designs successfully built, we would like to hear from you.
