About this position

Sales Tax Helper is hiring a sales and use tax attorney to do more than carry a caseload. We are looking for the lawyer who will help build the next phase of our practice, grow alongside the company, and develop into the leader of a team built around them.

We help businesses across the country resolve their hardest sales tax problems, from the first audit notice through appeals and litigation. Our team of attorneys, CPAs, and seasoned sales tax professionals brings more than 100 years of combined experience. That experience covers nexus studies, audit defense, administrative appeals, litigation, voluntary disclosure agreements, registrations, and returns, for clients ranging from small businesses to global corporations. We are known for practical advice, aggressive advocacy, and treating every clients money as if it were our own.

You will handle sales and use tax controversy work at a high level. That includes defending audits, drafting protests and appeals, building litigation strategy, and taking positions on statutes, regulations, and agency guidance that hold up when challenged. You will also advise clients on nexus, taxability, and exposure, structure and negotiate voluntary disclosure agreements, and work closely with our CPAs on records reviews and audit procedures. As the practice grows, you will take on mentoring, case supervision, and hiring, with a clear path to leading your own team. You will also have room to build your profile in the industry through articles, client alerts, webinars, and speaking.

This is a remote position open to candidates in Florida, Texas, Illinois, or California. We prefer candidates who are able to work from our (office location) two to three days a week, because the person in this seat will be building and leading a team.

You are a licensed attorney in good standing with an active license in at least one of Florida, Texas, Illinois, or California, and ideally two, or the ability to add a second. You have real experience in state and local tax, preferably sales and use tax controversy, audit defense, or tax litigation. You are comfortable reading financial records and working shoulder to shoulder with CPAs, and a background in public accounting, a Big Four SALT group, a state revenue agency or a corporate tax department is a strong plus. You write clearly and persuasively for revenue agencies and tribunals, you can explain complex tax issues to business owners in plain English, and you manage a full docket without dropping deadlines. An LL.M. in Taxation or a CPA license is a plus. Above all, you want to build something, and you want to lead the people who help you build it.
