About this position
Job Description
Lab Description
\nWe are in the Physics Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a top 10 school for physics with over 40,000 students. We are affiliated with the Departments of Biophysics, Chemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Cell and Developmental Biology. Research (and teaching), we do Biophysics. In particular, we look at transport within cells by "molecular motors" (which are little "taxis" that bring objects to their place of action) and at the formation of memories at the synapses of neurons in the brain. This is done by using single molecule super-resolution fluorescence microscopies, which is able to see nanometer-scale changes in distances. You can find out more by going to my web-site: https://selvinlab.physics.illinois.edu/.
\nRole Description
\nTwo post-doctoral researchers with a strong optics background are desired to create two laboratory-built microscopes. 1) To develop a Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscope (FLIM) with unprecedented speed and sensitivity relying on a pulsed excitation light combined with a Pockels Cell and (importantly) detected by a widefield (sCMOS) camera. (See a modified version of doi: 10.1126/science.adf9725). This has the capability of taking 100-1000x the rate that point-like FLIM has. 2) To develop a super-resolution single-molecule microscope based on the SELFI method with many colors. (A modified version of https://doi.org/10.1038/s41592-018-0005-3).
\nIt is also important that the developer has an interest in the application of the instrument once built. (S)he will either be familiar with the biology or be willing to learn it while working with a full-time biologist. It further anticipated that (s)he will also mentor graduate students.
